Junior shooters are very much embraced by SSAA Alice Springs Branch Inc. All juniors must be a member of SSAA National before applying to become a family or junior member of the Alice Springs Shooting Complex and SSAA Alice Springs. SSAA Alice Springs regularly conducts .22 rifle shooting competitions during which time junior shooters can obtain tuition from accomplished discipline captains.

The current Junior Shooting Program aims to assist junior shooters improve their marksmanship skills by encouraging participation in 3 core SSAA shooting disciplines using scoped rimfire rifles:

- Rifle Metallic Silhouette
- Field Rifle
- Scoped 3-Positional


These 3 core events are also held at the National Junior Challenge weekend each year, where the scores from these 3 events are combined to give each competitor an Overall Challenge score and upon which medals and trophies are awarded.

Rifle Metallic Silhouette is both a SSAA core and internationally recognised event that exposes the shooter to prevailing weather conditions while he/she attempts to knock over metal targets in the shape of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams over 4 different distances whilst in the offhand (standing unsupported) position. The match allows for scoped rimfire rifles of .22-calibre Short, Long or Long Rifle cartridge only, with a maximum weight of 4.6 kgs and trigger of any release weight. Rifles may be custom made and scope power is unlimited.

Junior shooters follow a standard course of fire for Rimfire Rifle Metallic Silhouette matches; as follows:

- 2 x 5 shots at 40m chicken targets in the offhand position (two and a half minutes for each group of 5 shots)
- 2 x 5 shots at 60m pig targets in the offhand position (two and a half minutes for each group of 5 shots)
- 2 x 5 shots at 77m turkey targets in the offhand position (two and a half minutes for each group of 5 shots)
- 2 x 5 shots at 100m ram targets in the offhand position (two and a half minutes for each group of 5 shots)

Junior shooters at SSAA Alice Springs Branch Inc. have the opportunity to enter the National Junior Rifle Metallic Silhouette postal competition, where each shooter may submit a score to be compared against others from around Australia. Rimfire Field Rifle is an event that applies practically to a large number of shooters and hunters by aiming to improve hunting marksmanship under rifle range conditions, and at the same time teaching them the capabilities and limitations of their equipment. Field Rifle is designed around the four most used field shooting positions of rapid fire, standing, standing post rest and sitting/kneeling post rest over various distances. The match allows for any scoped rimfire rifle chambered in .22LR, with a maximum weight of 4.0 kgs and trigger of any release weight.

Junior shooters follow a standard course of fire for Rimfire Field Rifle matches; as follows:

- 4 x 3 shots rapid fire in the offhand position at 25m (15 seconds for each group of 3 shots)
- 10 shots at 25m in the offhand position (15 mins)
- 10 shots at 50m in the standing post rest position (15 mins)
- 10 shots at 50m in the sitting post rest position (15 mins)

Scoped 3-Positional is designed around the three field shooting positions of prone, standing and sitting/kneeling. The match allows for any scoped rimfire rifle chambered in .22LR, with a maximum weight of 4.0 kgs and trigger of any release weight.

Junior shooters follow a standard course of fire for Rimfire Scoped 3-Positional matches; as follows:

- 20 shots at 50m in the prone position (30 mins)
- 20 shots at 50m in the offhand position (30 mins)
- 20 shots at 50m in the sitting/kneeling position (30 mins)
